Gardening is one of those hobbies that offers a little something for everyone, it doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or a pro with green thumbs, as it’s the ideal relaxation for those who require some rest of all the stress, provides organic produce for the eco-aware, and greenery for those counting on the plants’ natural beauty as a key element in a home’s curb appeal.

As fun as it can be, it still deserves dedication considering how plants need some TLC to thrive and they have their own watering needs you’d have to tend to regularly which if you have a busy schedule can turn into quite a problem. Another problem can be the insufficient space for gardening, as is the case with people living in smaller houses or apartments, however this shouldn’t be a reason to give up on your gardening dreams, especially when there are compact design options such as the use of window sill planter indoor or outdoors.

Space-savvy, you can fit them anywhere in your home, including on benchtops and in awkward corners that you don’t know how to fill, going to show you don’t need much to start a garden even when you live in an urban area. You’d be glad to have one of these planters considering they’re designed for convenience up to the point of ridding you of the watering chores thanks to an integrated self-watering system that you get to fill up when the level indicator shows the water reservoir is low. This way you won’t have to fear either drowning or drying out your plants because it’s a wicking action, i.e. plants get the water when they need it through their roots. If you want to have your fresh produce and use it in your meals, a window sill planter indoor is perfect for edible gardens too as you have just the needed space to plant your herbs and veggies.

Unlike other planters, these are safe for your produce since they’re made of BPA-free HDPE, and as such are sturdy, designed to stand the wear and tear plus they’re recyclable, so they can be used and reused without the worry they harm the environment or they pose a threat to your well-being. You’d also appreciate their stylishness which isn’t difficult to seamlessly fit in with the surrounding décor, and if you have the space enough and want to enlarge your garden, you can easily plug in more of these planters together thanks to connecter hoses. Makes you want to get one of your own right away and get your hands dirty with some gardening, right?

Do you want to enhance your home’s curb appeal and increase its value? Silly question, who doesn’t right? Well, great news is there is a way to do so without having to undertake makeovers that would cost you a fortune.

The secret lies in making use of the beauty of plants to your advantage, like that of agapanthus. Available in about ten species and as of late numerous varieties, both deciduous and evergreen, as well as in colours, from white to blue, purple and pink flowers, these are plants that captivate with their exotic looks.

Also known as Lilies of the Nile, they are native to South Africa, which means they are tough plants ideal for the Australian conditions, and do well in warmer and cooler areas (depending on the variety, that is). This gives you the option to grow them planted right into the ground, or in containers, whatever is your preference.

On the warning side, they are considered to be poisonous which is why it’s important to keep them away from children and pets.

The Care Basics

If you give them the care and provide them the conditions they require, you can be sure once fully grown the agapanthus would treat you with the lovely sight of lush leaves and colourful flowers.

Primarily, this refers to the location. Though they thrive best in full sun, part shade suits them well also. When it comes to the soil, except for the acid prone Agapanthus africanus, the rest of the varieties don’t have preference to specific pH conditions, so they’re suitable for most soil types.

Despite the regular watering need, they’re drought tolerant plants, and it’s best to avoid overwatering them. Always make sure the soil is well-drained, and count on the help of mulch to keep moisture at bay.

You can take your gardening skills to the next level by making your own mulch from garden waste. Mulching also happens to be a great solution for protection throughout winter.

Speaking of winter, some varieties are better suited for it than others, as in the case of deciduous being known as the hardy ones, however it’s important to still keep an eye on the ground to avoid wet conditions. If needed, protect them with fleece during the cold months, or consider keeping them in a sheltered spot.

Where to Plant

As mentioned, they do well in the ground equally as they do in containers. This gives you the opportunity to use for mass planting and get the natural setting look, bordering either by using the same variety or different for a more distinct outcome, or rely on them as the focal points in your garden thanks to how tall they grow.

There’s something really special about trees. Having trees in your yard means you get to enjoy lovely shades, enjoy the songs of birds, and depending on the tree itself, maybe even have the chance to try out some savoury fruits. They make it easy to add value to the home, and keep it pollution free too!

To sum it up, trees are life, and same as other plants, they require that you tend to their needs, keep them safe and healthy. Now, you may consider yourself capable of doing the tree chores on your own, but sometimes challenges can occur that you may or may not be able to overcome easily so the solution would be to hire residential tree care experts.

Why? Because tree work is no piece of cake. And it can be dangerous too. I know there’s the financial aspect many think of, which is why they choose to take matters into their own hands instead. However, think about it this way: residential tree care experts have specialised in tree care, and have years of experience.

They know how to trim and prune trees, even when it’s the case with branches around power lines, how to remove them, how to remove stumps and grind them. In other words, anything and everything to prevent accidents from happening, as their focus is on protecting the people, the property, and doing what’s best for the trees. No job is tricky for the arborists.

There’s also the fact prior to getting residential tree services, you can count on a quote outlining the work specifications and costs, so you’d know beforehand. Moreover, there’s the chance to get a free no-obligation tree health and safety assessments.

When deciding to take up the tasks yourself, even if you have the experience, you may not have all the right equipment and machinery necessary, whereas arborists have them and are trained in using the latest technology to carry out the job efficiently, and even finish up with minimum fuss, tidying up.

Arborists can also give you useful advice on how to best take care of the trees, to ensure they look their very best, minding when and how often you do the watering, the type of fertilisers to use, and the quantity, the protection you can use to prevent diseases, and the signs you have to watch out for in case of a disease, to stop it from spreading in time and save the tree.

If you love your trees, it sounds like a wise investment, doesn’t it?

Gardening is one of those things that people think comes easy until they actually try to do it themselves and they see how difficult and tiring it can actually be. If you’ve personally never held a trowel or a hose and think that the sun does most of the work for you, then let me dissuade you of that belief right off the bat. Having a garden with healthy plants is very rewarding but still incredibly hard as the plants are very delicate and require a lot of looking after so that they can grow properly.

If you aren’t prepared to dedicate some time, attention and back pain into your garden, then it’s probably better that you give up on any ideas of developing a green thumb before you even plant your first seed in the ground. However, if you are interested in gardening but simply don’t know where to start, then there is a very easy way to fix that.

The first thing you need to do is go to a garden nursery and pick out a few different types of plants that you will start out with. While a garden nursery is known to have many kinds of plants which they grow before giving them to you in order to make your task simpler, you will still want to start out with something that is not too tricky for beginners (like vegetables since they grow quickly). Before you pick out your plants, make sure that you get a few different kinds and that they have strong roots and a good colour.

Next you will need to test the soil to make sure that the PH and nutritional values are good enough to encourage growth, and if they are – start planting. Make sure that you have a well planned out grid and know at least roughly how big each plant will grow so that you can estimate the space that it will need at least to a certain point. Always make sure to leave more space than you initially assume and also try to not have the taller plants block the sunlight from reaching the smaller ones.

And lastly, you will also need some materials to help encourage the growth of the plants. The most important is the organic fertilizer, and the higher quality and quantity you get the better. Next you might want to get some plant starter, which you will want to use in liberal amounts on your plants in the beginning right after you plant them. And finally some mulch to give them a little extra protection against the elements in any sort of weather conditions.

All that’s left is to water them, trim them and remove any weeds and make sure they get plenty of sun. Do all of that properly and you will get a thumb as green as freshly mowed grass.

Having the outdoor area ideal for entertaining, enjoying some fresh air while reading a book, or having meals is something that’s part of the Aussie genes – we have a special connection with nature and love staying close to it. However, that means there’s also the gardening bit that not everyone is capable of handling well; we don’t all have the green thumbs for the job.

As luck would have it, though, there are the ideal plants that would turn everyone into a successful gardener – yes, I’m talking about low maintenance plants. Wanting to make the most of landscaping, and keeping a garden fresh year round, while having minimal of gardening work at that, one can’t overlook the evergreen ground cover.

What is meant by ground cover is the low growing vegetation in general, forming the lowest layer accompanying shrubs, and trees. The great thing about this sort of plants is the fact they spread, and they have a significant impact on erosion control, temperature, and moisture buffering, and amenity. Another impact is the prevention of weed establishing.

When you decide to implement an evergreen ground cover for your outdoor area, you’d be surprised by the diversity: from grass to vines, and herbs, the options are many. Shrubs and trees aren’t the only choices that you have in terms of planting the ground cover; there’s also the rock garden, sloping garden, in beds, borders, and even along paths.

Whether you’re up for some greenery with tones of purple, white, pink, silver, or cream, in the form of Ajuga reptans, the flowering Aptenia cordifolia, Carpobrotus glaucescens, and Evolvulus pilosus in blue, and white, the horizontal spreading of Variegated star jasmine, and Juniperus, or the dwarfish bamboo, it’s up to your taste, and where you intend to create the ground cover.

The addition of evergreens as the ground cover in your outdoor space is more than welcome, considering they last no matter the season, so in a way they help with increasing the home’s value, making it more welcoming. As mentioned, they can be used along paths and borders, and this way they add a sense of intimacy.

Though they are low maintenance plants, they still require some care from time to time, in the form of pruning, and shaping, but it all comes down to the type of plant it is – not all require it. Once you’ve selected the suitable plants for your outdoors, sit back and enjoy the greenery view.

When outdoor furniture is concerned, teak is an all-time favourite due to its exceptional durability and rich look. Teak is a very dense type of wood which can boast with a high content of rubber and oils which act as natural weatherproof seal, protecting it from water, insects, and rot. When this material is transformed into furnishings, the result is beautiful pieces that can last year after year. Although facts say that teak is perfect for outdoor areas, there’s still a lot more to learn before you go buying. For instance, here are some important things to consider when on the lookout for teak outdoor furniture.

Versatile Beauty

Teak has a natural shine and unique texture which cannot be found in other woods. Moreover, it comes in several rich finishes which can give plenty of charm to any teak outdoor furniture such as tables, chairs, benches, or sounloungers. Unfinished teak furniture will turn a silvery grey over time. Some people love this because it gives a certain rustic feel. If you like the thought of it, sit back and relax in your teak furnishings – they will start to grey after a few months. On the other hand, some people prefer to buy pre-weathered teak which has already received its silvery grey colour. The advantage of this is that you can choose your matching accent pieces knowing that the colour won’t change. However, if you want your outdoor furniture to preserve its golden brown shine, consider sealants to prevent the weathering process.

Is It Easy to Care For?

Considering furniture materials, teak requires the least amount of maintenance. Cleaning it once a year to remove some accumulated dust and dirt can prove to be enough for maintaining the fresh look. This is something anyone can do with the help of a bristle brush and some diluted household cleanser. Based on the finish you’ve chosen, ask your furniture supplier which detergent you should use. But of course, outdoor furniture is bound to gain some stains over time. Hosting an outdoor party, or just having lunch out in the open can result in stains from red wine or salad dressing on your precious teak table. In those unfortunate cases, its good to have a special teak cleanser to remove the stain without any problem. For extreme staining, or when there’s a nasty scratch, some mild sanding can bring teak back to its spotless glory.

What About Price?

This question must have been on your mind from the very start. Teak has a luxurious look, lasts for years on end, and requires only a minimal amount of care. All of these are desirable characteristics in outdoor furniture which naturally help drive up the price of teak. If you want an outdoor lounging piece that will serve you well for many years to come – teak ticks all the boxes! However, if you move quite a lot and cannot bring any outdoor furnishings with you to your new place, perhaps teak might not be the best option after all.

No garden is ever complete without having a quiet oasis where you can sit and enjoy the beautiful greenery. Many people have started looking for inspiration in the French country style, and just like the French, this type of lounge area has a “take it easy” approach. When choosing French outdoor furniture, keep in mind that it should be minimalistic and natural in order to evoke the humbleness of old Provence. Here are some pieces to include when creating your French-inspired lounge area that will make your garden go from blah to oh la la.

Reclaimed Timber Dining Table

To perfectly capture the spirit of French Provence, you can place a reclaimed timber table in your outdoor dining area – it will make it look more inviting and will add extra charm to the whole dining mix. Also, a dining table made of a material that has been previously used as a part of an old house or even a bridge, will bring a mystic feel. The scratch marks and smooth angles of this table will perfectly capture the rustic French appeal. And don’t forget how the French love eating together, thus, your outdoor dining table should be large enough to accommodate the whole family.

Rattan Chairs

Rattan is a very popular material in the French outdoor furniture design. It has a woven texture and a warm earthy appearance which reminds of cozy Sunday afternoons. What makes rattan chairs a great choice for outdoor furniture is the fact that this is one of the strongest woods in the world and can survive all kinds of harsh weather. Another advantage of rattan chairs is that they are extremely lightweight, which means you can move them wherever you want. Whether you want to sit in the shadows or bask in the sun, they are your ally. To up the comfort, add cushions. Try something in neutral colours like, beige or white, as to not disturb the calm ambiance you’re trying to create. Just picture yourself sitting in a chair like this one, surrounded by a blanket of colourful flowers – pretty much an impressionist-like painting, you must admit.

Minimalistic Decorative Elements

When using ornaments to decorate your garden, the key is balance. Try not to overdo it and include too many elements but rather stick to what’s appealing to the eye. A French country garden requires vintage-looking ornaments which are scattered here and there without being too much. Some of the essential additions of this type of garden are a small water fountain and a bird house. Visit a flea market when looking for these items to get them at more affordable prices. If you still have some room left for other decorations, you can put a small arbour over the entrance, a stone pathway leading up to the dining area, or even a statue. The charm of the French country style is that it is not strictly defined and leaves space for you to play with your imagination and improvise.

I don’t know if it’s just a question of trend, or maybe it really is a hobby more suitable to women, but a lot of ladies these days turn to gardening. Florists, organic food growers, herb growers and all other kinds of gardeners can be seen with their gloves and tools working in their yards. It’s no wonder though, if you have the space in your yard, skipping on the possibility to create a small garden where you’ll be growing flowers or food, is just silly. Besides allowing you to be responsible for the quality of the food you’ll grow or the flowers you’ll produce, gardening is actually a very therapeutic activity. It calms the nerves and provides the brain with a solid dose of fresh oxygen, since it’s an outdoor activity.

However, even if you decide to create a small garden and start taking care of it just as a hobby, it doesn’t mean that you should just dig around with a shovel. The point isn’t to take out your negative energy on your backyard and turn it into a pointless space filled with holes – it’s to create a very appealing small corner where you’ll do occasional digs and plantings. For that purpose, you’ll need to get a few basic tools which will allow you to take care of your garden – pro style. You can look for garden supplies online and get pretty good deals on your purchase. Here’s what your starter tool pack should include.

Tools for Working the Soil

This group of elements would include the shovel, the hoe, the spade and forks. If you’re going to be creating holes for planting your seeds, you’re going to need something to dig with. A solid shovel or a spade is a must here. The hoe is also needed for pretty much the same purpose with some minor differences. Forks are essential even if you don’t have a large garden with veggies or flowers or herbs or fruits. Since the grassy surface needs to be maintained and kept leaves free, so having one in your set of tools is also a must.

A Patch Helper Harvesting Tool

Once the first goods of your planting action are born, you’ll want to harvest them. For doing this the right way, you’ll need a harvesting tool. When you search for garden supplies online, look for one with a wooden, fancy handle and a strong knife part. You want quality pieces in your arsenal, not something that will brake on the first use.

A Bootjack

The bootjack is a necessary piece for anyone who doesn’t want to spread mud around the yard and get it in the house as well. Because you’ll be working in your small garden often, you want this piece close to where you take off your shoes. It’s a very convenient helping hand when you’re all muddy and dirty and have to enter your home.

A Hose and a Source of Water

Make sure you have a good quality hose on your disposal. You’ll need to water your small garden often and a close source of water is also needed. Make sure the hose is made of thick material so it doesn’t damage when it comes to certain obstacles on the ground.

Pruners

Anyone who wants to keep their garden looking splendid needs to have a pair of pruners. Pruners are a must for those who own bushy plants and trees. Some flowers, like roses also need pruning from time to time, so for the sake of outdoor beautifying, make sure you have a pair.
