It’s funny how RC as a hobby can seem so simple and but once you get into it, you begin to see that it’s actually much more interesting than it looks. A big part of what makes RC vehicles so special is that they can be controlled wirelessly. However, not a lot of people know what exactly makes this possible and how it all plays out. Well, for all the curious minds out there, there are two parts that allow you to remotely control the vehicle – the transmitter and the receiver.

Transmitter

In a way, the transmitter does most of the work but that doesn’t mean that all of the credit needs to go to it. Although both the RC car transmitter and receiver work together to make one operation possible, they are two individual parts that behave in their own way with the former being abbreviated as Tx. The Tx or transmitter is responsible for taking the commands and sending them to the receiver which applies them to the motors and servos. The transmitter is basically the remote for the car which operates at a certain frequency. It is worth mentioning that the frequency of the newer models has been increased and is now at 2.4 GHz.

A remote (transmitter) can also have multiple channels it can work in, which means that it is capable of controlling multiple servos and motors. Usually, transmitters have what is called a trim that sits next to each of the control knobs and alter their position. This helps you adjust the position of the servos and the starting point of the motor controller. Since most of them receive the same type of signal, the number of motors and servos you can control can increase. Most transmitters operate at 12v and have their power supplied by 8AA batteries and they also need to bind to the receiver so that they are able to communicate properly.

Receiver

The receiver (Rx), as we previously mentioned, gets the commands from the transmitter in the form of signals and sends them to individual channels through PPM (Pulse Position Modulation) commands. In order for the RC car transmitter and receiver to work together, they need to be set on the same frequency, with the receiver being powered by a motor controller, whilst feeding the servos with it.

While connecting a receiver is a process that usually involves a trial and error period, make sure that you avoid having the wires connected with the opposite polarity of each other as this can damage them. For servo or motor controller connectors that have a small plastic tab on them, the receiver will be easy to remove using only wire cutters since they only work with these type of receivers. One thing to remember is to always be careful with the antennae of digital receivers since they are very difficult to attach, once you break them.

A lot of people would agree that the beam and illumination settings of a flashlight are unmatchable features that make the flashlight the best tool to use at night. And while all that may be true, there is a new cool gadget on the market that’s here to change that – the LED Lenser SEO 7R.

The SEO 7R is a headlamp that has the beam of a flashlight while having the ease of use and convenience of a headlamp. Although it may not completely replace your flashlight when it comes to the number of features it has, it definitely makes for a great crossover product that will satisfy the needs of many night runners and adventurers. To get an idea of what this product is able to do, here are some of its features and capabilities.

Breathability

While wearing the SEO 7R may not be the most comfortable feeling in the world, especially for long periods of time, it is a headlamp that won’t cause you to sweat more than you already usually do. The hot weather in Australia can be a real deal-breaker when summer is at its peak but worry not as the LED Lenser SEO 7R has an open design that will let your head breathe. Its light electronic components and the material it’s made of also make it very lightweight.

Durability

The LED Lenser SEO 7R is made from extremely durable materials that can stand the test of time. Its synthetic band contains plastic and elastic, while the main unit is also made of plastic which is more sustainable to impacts than regular plastic units are. Unless you want to deliberately smash it, you won’t experience any breakdowns from mild bumps and falls. Plus, this device is can also operate in various weather conditions. The only downside is that the battery lasts only up to 5 hours, which for the average user is more than enough. In case you want to get more working hours out of it, I suggest you carry spare batteries with you.

Features

The first out of its many features, and probably the one that the 7R is most recognizable for, is the AFS or the Advanced Focus System which allows you to change between a more focused light and a flooded (wider) one. Next is the SLT (Smart Light Technology) which basically gives you two modes to choose from – Energy Saving Mode, which preserves battery life, and Constant Current Mode, which provides you with a continuous light output regardless of battery levels. Optisense technology is another cool feature that automatically sets the brightness of the light depending on the environment. It is also packed with other features, such as a rotating head, a washable headband, and the option to charge the unit with a USB cable.

Usually, hiking trips involve walking on uneven and rocky terrains, which is bound to take a toll on your feet and legs. Therefore, if you are planning to go hiking, you will need to invest in high-quality hiking boots to protect your feet from injuries as well as to make the most out of your adventure. As hiking footwear can vary greatly in design, weight, support and cushioning, it can be confusing for beginners to choose the right hiking boots for their needs. To make it easier for you, below in today’s blog post, I’ll explain the differences between the different types of hiking boots and the features you should consider.

Lightweight Hiking Boots

These boots are designed for hiking on technically undemanding terrain with light to medium loads. They feature mid-cut or high-cut, synthetic upper, EVA midsole and weight around 1000 grams per pair. Lightweight hiking boots provide better ankle support than the regular type but not as good as mountaineering boots. Due to the lightweight materials that they are made of, these boots are also less durable than mountaineering and backpacking boots and have softer and more flexible soles. However, the latter option is going to be just too much if you’re carrying a lot of load with you. All these features make lightweight hiking boots the ideal choice for hiking on established trails with a light to medium load.

Hiking Shoes

These shoes are low-cut around the ankles which means they provide very little ankle support. Therefore, they are not suitable for hiking on rocky terrain or for a long trip where you might need to carry a heavy backpack. Usually lighter than other hiking footwear and featuring softer soles, these shoes provide good comfort and performance on ‘easy’ trails.

Mountaineering and Backpacking Boots

Featuring a mid-cut or high-cut, leather upper and PU midsole, these hiking boots are best for hiking on challenging terrain with a heavy backpack. Mountaineering and backpacking boots differ from the types I mentioned above by being more robust and stiff in order to provide good stability and support on uneven and rocky terrain. For this kind of hiking, more rigid soles also ensure enhanced comfort as they don’t flex around every root, and stone you come across on the trail. The downside of these boots is that they are heavier and less breathable due to the more robust materials used in their construction. This means they are not the best option for day hikes on easy trails.

Waterproof or Not?

Hiking footwear can be either waterproof or not. Your choice will depend on how and where you plan to use them. The pros of choosing waterproof boots are that they will keep water out of your shoes, which means they will keep your feet dry and warm. The cons are that these boots are less breathable and will trap your sweat in. And if they get flooded with water, they will also take longer to dry than their non-waterproof counterpart.

Stripped of all the comforts of your home, the great Australian outback provides you with a thrilling, refreshing sensation, enabling you to step back and take a vacation from the monotony of the digital world. However, the one thing that most of us need to to bring to the backcountry in order to properly fuel up for the day is a compact kitchen. Cooking under the open sky does not necessarily have to be complicated. All you need are just a few items to prepare delicious meals for you and your loved ones.

Camping Stove

When choosing what you’ll eat on your camping trip, keep your meals simple. Stay away from meals that are too complex to cook as you don’t want to slave away cooking for too long outdoors. The food you take with you should be almost effortless to cook, such as bacon, steak, sausages, boiled eggs, chopped red potatoes, grilled vegetables, and of course, s’mores. To make cooking seamless, your best bet is taking a camp kitchen stove with you. You may be just fine with a one-burner stove, but for the ultimate convenience, you can also take a two-burner stove. That way you can prepare more food at once faster.

Camping cooler

Another must-have item is the cooler as you will need something that will keep your foods and drinks cool and fresh. Sure, you might be able to get by with a budget cooler, but ice chest technology has greatly evolved over the past few years, which means there are many models with some awesome features. Some models are designed to be indestructible keeping your food and drinks safe even from a bear encounter and can undoubtedly withstand the harsh weather elements. When buying a cooler, consider one with wheels for more convenient transportation.

Kitchen table

You may think you won’t need it, but actually, a sturdy, heat-resistant table is of the essence for a camp kitchen. Without a kitchen camp table, you will have a problem keeping your cookware organized. Moreover, being unorganized will prolong the time it will take you to prepare a meal, which eventually will turn out to be more of a hassle than an enjoyment. Look for a table that is spacious and easily portable. Some tables come with a sink and shelves for storing your pots and pants. These tables are all-in-one units as they offer you a place for washing while providing you with a convenient place to keep your kitchen equipment stored and organized.

There are many benefits to using renewable solar energy, especially in the rural Australian areas and agricultural parts. While solar energy for domestic use seems to be the most commonly discussed topic, solar pumps don’t get as much attention as they deserve. But regardless of that, they’re a popular choice among farmers, whether it’s for watering livestock or crop irrigation. Plus, they’re also becoming more used in residential and swimming pool applications – all that thanks to the various benefits they offer.

They are especially useful in places where grid power is unavailable or irregular. When adequately serviced and maintained, solar panel pumps for water offer the utmost reliability. Some systems feature advanced mechanisms that help you remotely monitor their flow rate and performance. Furthermore, just like all other solar applications, solar water pumps have extremely low operating costs. Although the initial installation cost and components may be pricey, the long-term savings make them one of the most worthwhile investments. You can recoup some of the purchase costs by getting a technology certificate from the Small-Scale Renewable Energy Scheme that’s offered by the Australian government in an attempt to promote clean energy for individuals and small businesses.

Moreover, solar water pumps are easily transportable. Therefore, if you need to move a considerable amount of stock, change the pump location as the seasons change, or you have some other reason, you can relocate the entire solar water pump system relatively easily. On top of that, they’re incredibly easy to maintain, which is very important for people using them in areas where there are no professional services. If the panels lose some of their efficiency, they can be separately replaced instead of having to replace the entire system.

Lastly, water pump systems are highly customizable and versatile. When it’s sunny and hot and the people and livestock need more water, solar pumps can move more water. If it’s rainy or overcast, the system will slow down and store a backup supply. You can implement solar panels in surface or borehole configurations, and use positive displacement or centrifugal pumps. Surface pumps work great for tanks, creeks, dams, and ponds, as long as the pump is placed under 6 meters above water level. Submersible and borehole pumps can also work effectively with solar panels, as long as the entire system is carefully and correctly planned.

Originally made to protect from immense heat in the Apollo mission over 50 years ago, the thin, lightweight plastic sheets known as ‘space blankets’ have made their way into the lives of camping enthusiasts. Their unusual properties like the thinness and shininess of the material may give you the impression that people use them so they can show off, but the truth of the matter is, this foil-like blanket has more to offer than you can imagine. The name describes it perfectly as it has numerous features which might make you think that it’s used in outer space. But enough chit-chat, let’s take a look at its features and common uses.

The main feature that space blankets are known for is insulation. You can use them in your sleeping bag to keep out the cold at night, or you can cut out and put pieces of it in your boots and gloves to protect your extremities from the cold and keep them dry. Since they are waterproof you can go full survival and use them to collect water when everything is covered in snow by putting a bit of snow on top of the blanket during the day so it melts into water.

They can also be used to start a fire. In this case, what you should do is use the blanket like a magnifier and focus the sunlight in a small spot where you want the fire to be. Afterward, you can use the blanket as a windbreak – just make sure you have it attached firmly to some sticks in the ground. Although a space blanket can withstand high temperatures (up to 254 °C), it’s best to keep it within a safe distance from the fire and avoid putting it directly into open flames.

An extremely useful feature of space blankets is their ability to reflect light thanks to their shiny cover. You can use a space blanket to attract attention to a rescuing helicopter when you are stuck in the wild or you can lay it flat on the ground to make it do all the work for you. Heat is another element that can be reflected by space blankets, and you can use it to make the heat from the fire or sun (if any) reflect from the blanket and travel back to you.

Furthermore, you can also use space blankets to cover certain areas of your camp where there’s food to scare away birds that may feed on it because they are easily scared by the reflection of light. If you are a passionate fisherman, a space blanket can help you catch more fish. Just cover your fishing rod with it and you’ll end up attracting more fish as they are attracted to shiny colours.

Horses are truly magnificent animals. Watching them elegantly gallop at high speeds is a breathtaking experience. Unfortunately, in the process of doing so, their hooves often hit their own legs with full force. As a result, horses are especially prone to leg injuries, fractures, inflammation, and various joint and bone diseases. With that being said, if you own a horse, especially one that takes part in racing competitions or performance shows, it’s especially important to properly protect his legs against hoof impact.

The best way to do so would be to get good splint boots. Although they are called “boots”, they mostly resemble wraps which are placed around the splints and tendons of the legs to properly secure them in place and protect them from the horse’s own hooves, as well as from the surroundings. As they help protect such an important body part, it’s important to make a quality choice. So, if you’re planning to explore the various splint boots for sale, here are some important factors that can help you choose the best for your equine friend.

Materials

Some years ago, most splint boots were made of leather, however, leather is really tough to maintain and becomes stiff after it’s been wet. Additionally, the stitching in leather deteriorates quickly even under the best care. On the other hand, splint boots made of neoprene or another synthetic material are often much easier to keep clean and can dry very quickly. They also are more breathable, thus allowing the horse to stay more comfortable wearing them. As opposed to leather, neoprene is also a much more durable material. And considering how horses’ legs take quite the beating, a durable material is definitely your best choice.

Cushioning

If you want to make sure there’s no such thing as a scratch on your beloved horse’s legs, look for splint boots for sale that are reinforced with some inside cushioning. The inside layer can be made of various materials such as rubber or fleece. Fleece is usually advisable to use, as it feels more natural on the horse’s skin, and doesn’t cause chafing. On the other hand, rubber can offer better protection against impacts. So, be sure to know what your priorities are.

Fit

Of course, when it comes to boots, it’s especially important that they fit well, regardless whether we’re talking about human or horse boots. And just like human boots, splint boots also vary in size. However, you can usually choose boot size by how large the horse is. With that being said, a 14 to 15 hand horse is size S, a 15.1 to 16 hand horse is medium size, 16.1 – 17 hand corresponds with size L, whereas 17.1 and above is XL.

While everyone has a different camping style, we can all agree that a little bit of comfort is never unwanted. You don’t have to seek five star hotel comfort to be able to pull off a trip that would make you look forward to more such trips.

This can be achieved with the simple addition of air beds. Regardless whether you’re sleeping in a tent or campervan, these beds make the ideal choice for a number of reasons. First of all, they are versatile, Starting from the first, they are portable, and don’t take up much space when not inflated so you can easily pack them up and carry them to the campsite.

Second, they are much better than sleeping bags because they provide the much needed support, so you don’t have to worry you’d wake up stiff, with aches and pains. Unlike other beds, or sleeping bags, these beds are raised off ground considerably.

Mind you, not just any type of air bed, like the blow up swimming pool beds, but air beds that self inflate. This means you wouldn’t waste effort in putting them up, as they have their own built-in electric air pumps that help inflate them quick.

In case of lack of power, some of these beds have blow valves for external pumps making camping off grid all the more comfortable and enjoyable, and an option for many, not just the 4WD enthusiasts.

Some features that come in handy when choosing the ideal air bed are storage pockets for keeping your valuables beside you, and band for extra stability that allows for sheets to be fitted on the sides. How you can tell comfortable bed from one of discomfort is if the design is with a flocked surface with sturdy coil beam construction; this combination makes for joint support as well as regulation of blood circulation.

It wouldn’t hurt either to pick one that’s undergone antimicrobial treatment so you wouldn’t have to worry about the growth of microorganisms. Your camping trip shouldn’t put your well-being at stake. Another characteristic that sets quality beds apart from the rest is retaining body heat.

The last thing you want is sleeping on a stone cold surface night after night, something that can ruin your camping experience altogether even if you sleep with more clothing layers. Why does this purchase make a worthy investment?

Well, at the end of the day, even if you don’t get to go on as many camping trips as you want, you can use the bed as an extra bed around the house for when guests come over for sleepovers.

Getting ready for a camping trip is in a lot of ways very similar to packing your luggage for a flight. You take only the bare essentials, you try not to take anything that you can do without since it will only weight you down, and you start drinking as soon as you go out your front door in order to get through the trip (chuckles). However, while the biggest problem in an airport is trying not to die of boredom while waiting in the check-in, if you go on a camping trip without the proper equipment you will have some much more serious problems than long luggage queues.

First and foremost on the list of essential camping gears is the sleeping bag. This is the most important item if you are somewhere up on the mountains where the temperature drops quite drastically during the nights. Because of this, it is very important that you get a quality one that can properly fit you and which you can zip up to the top in case you ever feel cold, even while inside. Additionally, it might also be a good idea to get some thermal clothing that will cover everything from your feet to your shoulders since you might really need it.

Next, you are going to need a good reliable backpack. While everyone’s first choice is probably to go for the biggest one they can get so that it can easily fit all of the different camping gears inside, make sure that that is really what you need. If you plan on moving around and hiking for longer periods than you plan to camp for, then the larger pack can really be a burden to you. If you aren’t sure what you plan to do, simply cover all your bases. If you make sure that the backpack you chose isn’t too cumbersome while still having room to fit your sleeping bag, tent and a few other items, then you have nothing to worry about.

Finally, the last item that you should probably take along with you, or should I say items, is either a small hatchet or machete. While this may seem dangerous, in truth the only danger you will pose is to the firewood you intend to chop up in order to make your camp fire. Of course seeing as they are pretty sharp tools even in more experienced hands, if you are not using them it is best to take every possible precaution and keep them in their sheath. After you get all of these, all that’s left is to pick out a few additional items that you personally can’t do without and head for the nearest mountain.

Water bottles are a must have for anyone who spends time out hiking, camping or running. There are plenty of different designs, each with a specific features adding more functionality and in some cases, just for the purpose of looking cooler. With an abundance of models available on the market it can get a bit confusing trying to settle on a design. So I figured I’d share my two cents on the matter and give you my opinion regarding which bottles served me the best and what features I enjoyed the most.

Thermos Intak 24-Ounce Hydration Bottle

The Thermos Intak has great features to offer. These water bottles are made from BPA- free impact resistant plastic, perfect for throwing in the dishwasher for a quick clean. It also has a convenient push button sipper that is designed to stay more hygienic and it also has a ring around the cap that allows you to monitor your water intake for the day by turning the ring to match your progress. It also comes with an ergonomic grip making it comfortable to hold and 24 ounces capacity.

Klean Kanteen Classic 27-Ounce Stainless Steel Bottle

The Klean Kanteen Classic is a favourite among many people. It is made from stainless steel which is very easy to wash and it can be used in a dishwasher without having to worry about your bottle breaking. The Klean Kanteen stainless steel cap is favourite among many but it can also be switched out for the sports version, which is plastic but has a more comfortable opening. The Klean Kanteen stainless steel cap however is much more durable and can be washed in a dishwasher. This cap also allows you to clip a carbiner on it, so you can attach it to your belt or backpack.

Lifefactory 22-Ounce Glass Bottle

Lifefactory’s bottle is made from glass that is held together with a protective grip mesh surrounding the outside of the bottle. It is there to allow you to have a better grip and prevent the bottle from breaking easily. They are also BPA/BPS free. If placed in a dishwasher with the protective grip it can be washed safely. However, there is a chance of it breaking without it. Overall, this is a nice transparent drinking bottle suitable for different drinks.

Hydro Flask 24-Ounce Insulated Bottle

The Hydro Flask has a double wall vacuum insulation allowing it to keep the content either hot or cold. Because of the vacuum, the outside temperature won’t affect the inside temperature allowing the liquid to retain its own temperature for longer, providing you with cold beverages in the summer and hot for the winter. It has a standard mouth opening with a diameter being 45 mm, which is wide enough for pouring in denser liquids such as coffee or sports drinks and it is covered by the Hydro Flask lifetime warranty.

Boar hunting has been quite a popular pastime activity for many rural Australians ever since they’ve settled. In fact, there are even some magazines about this sport, but in the past few decades, the popularity of boar hunting has been on a steady decline. Unfortunately, it’s been estimated that today wild boars outnumber us. So, if you’re looking to change that, great! But bear in mind that you’ll first need to learn how to track them, and how to minimize the risk of getting in danger when hunting.

Now, if you’re looking to boar hunt the old-fashioned way with a spear, then first things first – you’ll need a functional spear. You’ll find many different types of spears online and in outdoor, survival, and tactical stores around Australia. A functional spear features a sturdy reinforcing rib, which makes the spear incredibly stiff for maximum penetration. Moreover, the blade should flex under stress instead of breaking.

However, boar hunting can also be dangerous, so you should also pack a firearm and avoid going hunting alone. A wounded boar can be extremely dangerous, and once its survival instincts kick in, it won’t hesitate to attack you. One way to avoid danger is by hunting with a vehicle or on a tree. But you still have to be careful once you wound it and go down for the finishing blow.

Boars, like deer, are most active in the evenings and in the mornings. They also travel in small groups, which makes them even more dangerous. But on the bright side, that makes them easier to track, as they leave a lot of signs behind them. They oftentimes follow food and water sources, especially on hotter days. Additionally, they aren’t very shy about being in an open field.

When hunting a boar with a spear, knowing where to strike is essential. Their hide is thick around their shoulders, as it protects their lungs and heart. This not only means that you should have a good spear, decent throwing skills and an intention to kill, but a backup bow, or better yet, a firearm to finish it in case you don’t kill it with a spear. Boars also don’t bleed much, so if an injured one runs off, it may be difficult to track it in the dark.

Boar hunting can be a very rewarding and exciting experience. It’s a test of strength, patience and skill. But it can also be quite dangerous, especially for people who are new to the sport. It’s very different from hunting with a firearm, and it brings a thrill that can’t be found even when hunting with a bow.

You’re a nature lover who loves spending time outdoors every chance you get and you finally adopted the life of a camper and got your caravan? Congrats and welcome to the club. As much as it depends on where you decide to park, it’s also up to the way you prepare for a trip in the great outdoors to make the most of it. If you think furnishing up the caravan with all the pieces and appliances, equipping with all the maps, reading into campsite rules, packing up different sets of clothes, planning out the menu for every day of your trip and carrying and stacking up on non-perishable food is all there is to preparing for a unique camping adventure, not so fast.

You’re forgetting one essential preparation step: amping up the level of security. Though it might sound like a far-fetched scenario, having your caravan broken into or stolen as soon as you head out to explore the surroundings is more than possible, so security is not something you should be taking lightly. An unattended caravan is easy prey. You can never know when thieves are lurking, and end up losing your precious home on wheels even if it’s parked in your yard so keeping your caravan safe is a top priority that you can take care of by starting out setting up a wireless alarm system.

Depending on the location, you can further secure and customise your caravan by using locks and clamps, and adding a cover or an awning can talk a thief out of stealing as removing them can give additional trouble and waste additional time. There are plenty more accessories you can find to give you peace of mind and keep your caravan safe, such as a coupling lock preventing a lift of the coupling latch when the caravan is not coupled to a vehicle, or a wheel lock or wheel nuts that stop wheels from turning. There are other ways you can be more prudent as well, such as keeping valuables and essential items out of sight to potential thieves by not exposing them near windows, making a list of the things you carry with you and making the grand entrance more difficult by adding a security door that you’d remember to lock every time you’re not around.

Don’t forget to rely on your social skills and become a friend of the neighbours around you at the campsite, so they can inform you when there’s someone suspicious. Then again, in case you find yourself in a situation of having your caravan stolen, you could locate it with the help of a GPS tracking device that gets activated as soon as the caravan’s on the move. If you haven’t yet considered resorting to the use of this remarkable technological invention, now is the time.

There comes a time in life when we could all use a bit of time off, away from the exhausting everyday schedule, and get some well deserved rest. While for some this represents time spent in hotels’ lounging areas, swimming pools and massage tables, for others nothing could be more rejuvenating than nature. I’m one of those nature lovers who can’t seem to get enough of it which is why I ended up getting my own home on wheels. I have to tell you, it wasn’t exactly the easiest thing to do, especially because I also had my family’s opinions to take into consideration, so if you’re planning on doing this kind of purchase as well, I have some bits of information to share with you.

As you already know, when buying your motorised home, you can expect to buy it with certain pieces of furniture but that doesn’t mean you’re going to like all of them, and by all means don’t expect to get a fully equipped one for the price of an empty one (been there, done that). Starting from the kitchen (since most campervan sinks are designed to save space and come with a cooker), I wasn’t that happy with what I usually saw in the home on wheels for sale, so after I got mine, I immediately set on the quest to get a campervan sink. Once I found it, I combined it with a dish drainer and then, after doing calculations on how much we eat and how much of storage space we do need for all the food and utensils, I moved on to complete the kitchen with a compact fridge and storage units.

Though we all imagine utmost comfort as much as we have in our actual homes, a campervan can provide it in a limited space so you have to learn how to be space savvy. Sure, there are plenty of furniture pieces and appliances you’d love to include, but it’s important to be considerate of the room and the people you’d get to share it with – the last thing you need is a crammed campervan where you can barely make your way through and have to do more cleaning than having a blast. This goes for what you make part of the sitting area, bedroom and bathroom. If you simply must have a not-so-compact shower cabin, then get a foldable sink instead.

If you want to amp up on the space saving game and see what all the minimalism frenzy is about, you can find a great deal of furniture that’s foldable, such as tables and beds. The fun thing about this kind of furniture is you also get to have a bit of exercise as you fold and unfold them every time. Looking at things from this perspective has made me rethink my home interior and the choices I’d made before, realising why it doesn’t hurt to implement some minimalist ideas in other life aspects as well – that’s my advice to you, future campers.

They say that details matter big time and that it is the small things that make life better and complete and it’s no different when it comes to camping and caravanning. Without the small things, the experience would be incomplete and slightly more inconvenient for everyone involved. Since the caravan is a huge vehicle to maneuver with, you’ll need help in the form of caravan jockey wheels and caravan jockey wheel spares. These will enable an easier and safer handling of your tow vehicle when lifting, hitching or lowering the coupling over the tow ball and maneuvering the van around when uncoupled.

You can usually find caravan jockey wheel spares online or in brick and mortar equipment stores. The jockey wheel usually comes with the caravan and there’s a good chance of a clamp being attached to the draw bar or “A” frame. However, you can decide to change it and get a new one. There are many jockeys to choose from. They can differ in height and their tyres can vary from pneumatic to solid rubber. The main difference between the different types is how they work.

The fixed or standard jockey wheel is usually bolted or welded directly onto the new draw bar and has either pneumatic or solid wheels. You can adjust the height by undoing the lever and moving the shaft down or up as needed. This suits most leisure and domestic applications.

The swivel bracket on the other hand, is designed with a much easier method of use in mind. There’s no need to detach it from the trailer, instead, you just pull the release handle and the jockey wheel will rotate in a suitable traveling position.

Buying the right jockey wheel for you will depend on a few things. First off, check that the load capacity is applicable to the caravan and ensure it has been produced by a reliable manufacturer before making a decision. Moreover, talk to other caravan owners and experts about how easy it is to maneuver, use, adjust or remove it before buying a specific jockey wheel.

Whatever type you end up choosing, don’t place more weight than it can hold and look to only use it when the caravan is empty. When parking, put support like a board under the jockey to distribute the weight and dodge having it sink into the ground as this can damage the wheel or the jack. If you’re considering to buy a new jockey wheel, talk to your dealer and other travelers first, to see whether it will work for you.

Being a huge motorcycle enthusiast, I’m always stuck between the choices of either trailering my bike or riding it to the place I plan on going for an extended period of time. Let’s be honest, bikes are exciting, but they’re not the most comfortable way to travel long distances, especially if there are chances of heavy winds or rain. Regardless, I don’t go anywhere without my bike, and in order to do that, I always strap it on my truck with a load securing equipment.

When there’s a need for something to be secured on the back of a truck, van, SUV and trailer, doing it with a load securing equipment (such as tow straps and tie downs) is your best bet. These dependable and sturdy pieces of equipment will allow you to rest assured your valuable possessions (in my case my bike) are safely secured for transport.

Both tow straps and tie downs are made of very similar, and sometimes the same material. However, they’re used to solve different problems. Tie downs are long, flat pieces of woven material and are mostly used to secure items to an open trailer or vehicle in the back. They also include a way to tighten the hold down, which is something you need in the case of transporting a bike.

Tow straps on the other hand, are configured in a way to strap down a vehicle for recovery, or hold tires in place. Their capacity is outstanding and they’re most often built to specifically haul vehicles or fit race car trailers. Besides hauling cars, they can be used for hauling heavy equipment. I personally haven’t used one of these, but I have one in the back of my truck for emergency cases.

One of the easiest tie downs to use are the ratchet straps. They’re called ratchet straps because they have the ability to “ratchet” up the tightness of the strap easily and quickly with hardware that is integrated into the strap itself. Ratchet straps work in a similar way as belt buckles, except they don’t have holes so you aren’t limited to certain lengths.

The hardware that accompanies the material is of great importance. It doesn’t matter how sturdy and strong the material is if the attachment parts are flimsy and weak. You’ll want to ensure you’re getting high quality hardware when looking for tow straps or tie downs. By hardware I mean vinyl-coated S-hooks to avoid scratching your bike, and buckles that prevent slippage when you’re tightening the straps.

For the purpose of better understanding, I want you to hold your breath all the way while reading this article. You’re not up for the challenge? Well, that only proves your rookie-ness regarding freediving. However, since you’re here, you must be somewhat interested into finding out more about this particular sport and that’s why I suggest you continue reading below where I’ll go over all the necessary freediving equipment required and some additional tips.

First of all, it’s important to note that freediving is a kind of sport that makes one appear more than a mere mortal. The blueprint of this occupation is the ability to put your breath on hold while nothing else is on hold (all your other abilities). It requires focus, patience and much practice in order to achieve the half-human, half-mermaid/aquaman status. If one wants to conquer the bluest of depths in one breath, they first must learn to let go of the need to conquer anything. To be one with the ocean, to be able for a moment there to beat the odds without relying on machinery, but on your own physical abilities, you need to have a profound understanding and respect for that whole new world you wish to explore. Also, you must abide to the most important rule of this sport and that is: never go freediving alone.

Apart from being mindful and prepare through prior practice, there are also several pieces of essential freediving equipment that can surely smoothen up the whole experience and help you and the sea go along swimmingly. The list is short and almost predictable as you’ll only need a simple snorkel, a wet suit, flexible fins, a torch and of course, an underwater camera. You may think that the camera is not that much of an essential piece, but perhaps, this amazing freediving couple might help change your mind.

Now if you want to have an extraordinary underwater experience and if you are willing to spend a bit more, look for a mask with mirrored HD lens. These masks provide 15% more clearness and they hide the eyes, a quality which can make you more approachable for fish to come and take a closer look (yes, they think we have spooky eyes). Finally, if all goes well, and if you are careful and responsible I am sure it will, you’ll have some pretty awesome stories to tell.

If there’s something I hate from the bottom of my heart, it would be a half-finished job, or something done only for the sake of saying it’s been done. Like owning a camper van and saying you’ve been camping a countless number of times, when all you’ve ever really done is just hop in the van and drive to a beautiful site, make a barbecue for the day and drive back home. Or maybe you’ve gone a little bit beyond your comfort zone and spent the night under a tent, while all the little rocks and the sticks on the ground made your sleep everything but comfortable. No wonder you’ve come back home all tired, nervous, with a severe back pain and a question troubling your mind: is camping suppose to be that painfully hard? That’s not camping, my friend.

What camping is all about

A common misconception is that camping is a tough experience that requires a lot of energy, physical endurance and a lot of patience and all that is because you’d be in a forest, or on a camping site far from conditions for a normal lifestyle. What nobody wants to accept is that camping has nothing to do with the space you’d be positioned to camp on, but it has more to do with how well you’ve organized your trip and whether you know what exactly you need to bring to recreate the homey feeling that would make your experience recreational.

Take off your shoes

The thing about going camping that most people can’t work with, is needing to wear their shoes – all the time. You’re outside, and walking around bare foot isn’t exactly convenient for a number of reasons. One way to solve this problem is to get ground mats camping purposes specifically made for, which differ largely from an ordinary mat giving you no reason to worry about damage, dirt or having to spend a day after to clean it. These are generally multi-layered mats, mainly designed to keep dirt, mud and everything associated from entering your van, tent or RV. You can also pack it and take it with you if you want to have a picnic somewhere far from your camping site. As a basic convenience that allows you to take your shoes off, with ground mats camping gets another dimension, like you’re walking at home: barefoot.

Stop worrying about the quality of sleep

Where you position your tent matters a lot. It’s good if you have a soft, grassy surface to position it so that you find it comfortable for sitting and sleeping. But, it’s the ground, and there’s no way you can find a surface that’s just perfect for positioning a tent on it. There will always be small rocks, sticks, or grass you don’t want to damage, or ants, or anything. This would interfere with the quality of sleep and from this point on, you’d have a very, very bad camping experience. A ground mat can be the solution to this problem as well – there are types which you can use to place the tent on so that you get high quality underfoot comfort.

Finally, when you’re well rested and get the basic feeling of freedom while not being at home, you can easily get the rest of the stuff in order. Food, the fire, lighting and camping cookware are all the rest of the things you need to take care of in order to have a comfortable and real camping experience.
